Sad news today for a great coach and a leader in the dance team community as Missy Marti faces a non-renewal of her contract at New Ulm Cathedral High School. Missy has coached at Cathedral for 15 years and has a storied history there as coach for the Sonics. Having coached against Missy’s teams for the last 10 years, I have nothing but the utmost respect for her integrity and class.
Personally, this kind of thing is really hard to swallow. Great coaches as well respected and as credible as Missy are not easy to find, especially in rural Minnesota. While Missy can surely find a position anywhere – these kinds of petty firings hurt teams and destroy fragile team culture. Teams with frequent or major coaching changes like this tend to decline or even fold altogether down the road, which hurts the sport of dance team as well as the current team and coaches. Hopefully, the amazing girls on the Sonics team can make their future a bright one – and that public support can bolster the team and a great coach in Missy.
