Well, the weather outside sure doesn’t seem to think its winter dance season, but never the less we’re getting ready to hit the gym floor starting next week. (and some shows this weekend too). Lets cover some of the goings’ on:
MADT Convention and Coaches’ Meeting: Last Saturday 11/7 the coaches’ association hosted the annual student leadership convention at Chaska High School. A highlight of the day was the fabulous Rob Miller from Proactive Coaching coming to talk about what makes teams great, and how to be a great teammate. If you weren’t there – you missed out! Check out all the great materials from Proactive Coaching online – and add them on Facebook and Twitter for some great thoughts on teamwork and modern ethics. On the more “business” side – the coaches meeting included a thoughtful reflection and discussion about the future of dance, and how to grow dance team and MADT membership. As a Class A coach myself — I’d love to see us break over that 50% membership for class A. Being involved, informed, and continuous growth as a sport is so key to the health of our programs. Never been to an MADT event? Membership is still open for another 2 weeks. If everyone reached out to teams who aren’t “paying attention” online or in the dance community – we could surely build a more diverse and representative membership of the coaches’ (yet really, dance team’s) association.
Rules: If you haven’t been through the online rules book – I’m hosting it as a resource in a digital viewer and PDF format. Make sure you take a closer look. I found it a bit challenging to fill out those new choreo certifications correctly (I should have been documenting as I went along!) – so coaches I’d suggest getting to that right away in case you or your school’s AD have questions. I even learned something new about our abundant rules changes this past weekend – that there was a change inserted that didn’t come from the rules committee process. I wasn’t aware that was an option. Of course, if you’re confused about that process too – you can always ask your AD to forward those concerns to the MSHSL. You’re always better off getting clarifications than getting a deduction or DQ. Same is true for those dangerous moves or uniform compliance questions – your head rules clinicians are a great resource for teams. You don’t have to be playing a guessing game heading into our first meets. Thanks to those officials fielding questions — I’m sure the phrase “lots of questions” doesn’t quite cover it this year.
Schedule: My schedule is filling up fast with meet dates — but not a single order of performance or schedule of the day has come in yet! Don’t forget to submit those to me (PDF’s are best) or just send me some simple start times, etc for weeknight meets. Our rabid fans are clamoring for schedules and I’d love to get everyone there on time to see you! I’ll look forward to those submissions and post links from the “schedules” page. Once meets have concluded, submit your scores directly so the score grids can be updated in a timely fashion. I take email, PDF, screen shot, picture, text – whatever. Thanks for your help in getting that rolling this year!
