Well we made it through a huge weekend of invitationals and the season is really starting to heat up and take shape! Be sure to check out the results page for full reports of the very loooooong list of placements, congratulations to all those teams who competed this weekend. Here are some highlights from recent results and some previews of this weeks’ events.
Apple Valley Invitational:
No big surprises in class A as Crosby and St. Charles take wins in their respective divisions. In AA kick , a very strong Austin team falls to the Faribault powerhouse in a tight matchup. Austin has an intense and dark approach while Faribault tries out a theme for this year. Both teams will be top contenders this year. South St. Paul takes the AA jazz win. In AAA kick, host school Apple Valley squeaks out a 3rd while Blaine and St. Cloud Tech surge ahead for the top spots. In jazz, MG makes a strong first place while both Andover and Duluth East finish ahead of a usually strong top finisher, Blaine.
Good thing I snuck over here after A/AA at Apple Valley. This one was not to be missed. We’re seeing a high number of ties at this point and I get the feeling on my end it’s because we have a lot of “apples to oranges” comparisons of dances that make it tough to pick out those little nuances that make a winner over a second place finish. Glad that’s not my job to choose. In AA jazz, state champion Chaska takes the win, while over in the kick division Sartell breaks out of the tie on top. If you had been there to see both dances you know these girls are already dancing for their lives and its only December 1st. Sartell is doing a cute 20s theme with fringy flapper dresses and all. Very hard to pull that off and they sold it to every last girl. Chaska goes space age and looks even stronger in formations and transitions than they did last year at this time so they should be placing high from now until state for sure. TG does a really fun sort of “jungle” approach to kick with mesmerising green costumes I loved. They had the most fun with their dance and I think that will bode well for them heading forward. St. Cloud Cathedral amazed me with their “genie” theme and harem pants that actually worked to kick in quite well. Great music edits kept me guessing and singing along. AA will be STACKED as usual this year. In AAA the big jump was Eastview winning a tie with Wayzata in jazz – taking a first from the Trojets for the first time in quite a while – maybe since state 11? (correct me…) and certainly a long time coming for Eastview who has had 3rd at state on lock for quite a while now and looks to push up from there this year. (I wish I had stayed to see that one!) Edina takes 3rd and continues to show they mean business this year. The news wasn’t all bad for Wayzata though, who ended up on the better end of a tie in kick, beating Burnsville for the 2nd place spot after Eastview took the win.
Detroit Lakes Invitational:
The DL invite saw state champs Aitkin take the top honors in class A kick, while Frazee took jazz (Aitkin did not compete). Alexandria won the AA kick division and host Detroit Lakes won the jazz division.
8 conference matchups make for a busy week! Mississippi 8, Suburban East, and Wright County Conferences all have their first meetings, while Lake, NW Suburban, Classic Suburban, and South Suburban all have rematches or change styles and break into some kick. Keep an eye on the schedules page for those timelines. Eastview, Lakeville North, Hutchinson, Albany, Fergus Falls, and Zumbrota all host big invites this weekend and schedules will be updated for those as we go.
