Sections Preview – 1st Weekend 2019

There is zero chance we can start the sections conversation without mentioning the historic closures of schools due to cold and snow this week.  Teams who have to “go first” with sections this weekend will certainly be feeling the upset in the schedule.  Thankfully, travel weather for the actual event day is going to be mild.  Hopefully teams can keep the rust off and deliver on this the most important meet of the year.  Lets dig in on the details of each event for weekend 1.

Section 2AA:  Chisago Lakes hosts the annual battle royale between Totino Grace and Benilde St. Margarets who are well out in front of the pack for spots to state.  Totino is having a particularly strong kick year and should be looking good to end up with a blue medal Saturday.  Jazz is always another story as we don’t really know how Benilde is actually scoring there.  Chisago Lakes looks comfortably in 3rd, but last year we had surprises from Zimmerman in kick.  Duluth area schools also tend to make a state push every few years so keep an eye on their performances as well.

Section 3AA:  Orono, Marshall, and Mound Westonka will try to repeat their appearances at state again this year.  The field will be pretty crowded as Hutchinson and Belle Plaine will be right in the mix for kick.  It’s been a while since we’ve seen a Belle Plaine kick team at state, but they know how to get it done if it really comes down to that.  In jazz, I’d look out for Holy Family who has some high-profile wins this year and just might be due for a resurgence.  Easily the most entertaining AA section this year.

Section 4AA:  Alexandria hosts the northern matchup with Sartell scoring at AAA levels.  They should be favored here, with Rocori also comfortably in the mix for both styles.  St. Cloud Cathedral has had a more low-profile year and will face a challenge from St. Cloud Apollo, Becker, and Willmar who will be in the hunt.  Becker seems to be making strides at the right moments, and will look to their momentum to help.

Section 2AAA:  Edina’s splashy new gym hosts the highest profile event this weekend for section 2AAA.  Without exaggeration, 7 teams in this section could all deserve state placements.  Wayzata is having a banner year in kick, but that’s my only bet I’m willing to make.  Its been a season where a lot has happened and developed for these teams.  In the kick division, I’ll be keeping an eye on Maple Grove, Chanhassen, Chaska, and Edina for two of the qualifying spots.  In jazz, Maple Grove will have to fend off Chaska and Eden Prairie while trying to get in the mix with Edina and Wayzata who will be pushing for the top spot.

Section 4AAA:  This one is shaping up to be more exciting than last year with strong seasons from Brainerd and Anoka, and more question marks from teams who are trying to be at the right place at the right time to capitalize.  St. Cloud Tech is perennially in the mix, but I’m excited to see Sauk Rapids potentially make their first AAA state appearance after being so close last year. Blaine is always a late surging team who won’t be ignored in this discussion, and Duluth East has quietly crept up the scoreboard as well.  I’d keep your rank guesses pretty flexible this year.

Good luck to all the teams this weekend, it’s been so fun watching you improve and make the final push to the state tournament.  What an awesome year in dance team!
