Weekend Preview – 12/8/18

December is hitting its stride this week as just about everyone is getting out to compete somewhere in the state.  Conference points are racking up, especially for those with championships at the end of this month.  Its too early to call many of those races for the banners yet, as each performance in December is usually a big step in the right direction.  Enjoy the small rivalries and packed schedules of the month, the sections picture is still long off.  Finally, some dry travel weather for teams this weekend, lets look at what will be in store.

Lakeville North:  The north invite is the marathon of the week winner with a schedule that stretches from 8:30-5.  Plenty of time for a team nap!  17 AAA squads will try to take on a strong host squad along with memorable names from Spring Lake Park, Henry Sibley, and Lakeville South.  I’d be sure to catch performances from Owatonna, Eagan, Champlin Park, St. Michael, and Farmington who are all trying to make moves in their conference and sections picture.

Eastview:  The AA division is an all-star lineup of state level teams.  Faribault, Mound Westonka, Simley, Rocori, Marshall, Totino Grace, St. Cloud Cathedral, Sartell, and Benilde St. Margarets have all qualified (or won!) the tournament last year.  The Benilde/TG matchup is always a classic, but really this whole field will be fun to watch.  On the AAA side Blaine, Mounds View, Wayzata, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Edina, and Prior Lake will be squaring off.  Minnetonka, Hopkins, and Chanhassen are sneaky good here too.  15 team meets are notorious for being tough to rank, so watch for potential more than final placements.

Fridley:  The tigers host the only 3 class meet this week with A/AAA now going in the morning.  PACT, Wabasha Kellogg, and Lake City make for a tough class A division.  Anoka and Centennial will be highlights of the AAA side, with Duluth East, Andover, Irondale, and Roseville trying to get in the mix.  AA will host Zimmerman, Austin, and Orono with a wide-open field of up and coming teams looking for more.

Zumbrota Mazeppa:  More class A fun will be on the agenda at ZM.  Richfield, Houston, St. Charles, Zumbrota, and Cannon Falls will be on the watch list.  Rushford, Lewiston, and Dover will be trying to shake things up.  With few scores from this group, keep an eye out for anyone coming out strong and clean to do well.

Albany:  The west central teams will be clashing at Albany this weekend.  I always wait for Monticello and Melrose to make jumps up the leaderboard, but the class A matchup between Duluth Marshall and Montevideo will be the feature here.

Renville County West:  The first major western Minnesota event will kick off this weekend at RCW.  Debuts from Yellow Medicine East, Lac Qui Parle Valley, New Ulm Cathedral, and BOLD will be highlights.  New and growing programs from St. James, Minnewaska, and MACCRAY are worth checking out.  Class A really takes a while to get up to full tilt, so plenty of surprises can happen here.  (this event will be live streamed on YouTube via RCW media)
