Well, if the weather can hold off long enough to get the drivers on the roads it looks like we should have a busy weekend across the state for dance teams. Of course, anything can happen if teams have to cancel, so keep an eye on those performance orders, they update if I get any changes. Lets look at this weekend’s action: (schedules page)
Lake City Invitational: The Tigers will be hosting their annual SE Minnesota matchup and are looking to repeat at the top spot again this year with the absence of area rival, Cannon Falls from the meet. Anything can happen in the jazz division as the usual suspects from this region get together. It will be interesting to see where last weekend’s kick winner Randolph will fit in with a bigger meet at Lake City this weekend in section 1A action.
BOLD Invitational: The Divas will be bringing together a wide range of A teams to this meet in Bird Island, with sections 2 and 3 mostly meeting up. YME will debut this weekend in this pack, and state participants BOLD, LqPV, and Crosby will be there to meet them. In jazz it will really be anyone’s game as these teams haven’t all come together yet this year and class A jazz can be really unpredictable this time of year.
Academy of Holy Angels Invitational: This AA matchup will be stacked with difficulty and is usually the ending statement before we head into winter break for these teams. Whoever is doing well here will be making their mark on round 1, with everyone else left to figure out what they’ll need to focus on for January. Just getting 5th or 6th at this meet will be a big accomplishment. If you’re in the cities this Saturday, I’d get over to AHA to see this one.
Fridley Invitational: The fun and relaxed Fridley invite is bringing together a wide range of AA teams from across the state, with a few rarely seen teams like Hermantown and Minneapolis Edison making a stop on by. Montevideo and Albany are coming in from the north and west, and brand new squad Rockford will be making an exhibition. Should be a fun variety in this matchup.
Maple Grove Invitational: The Crimson play host to 9 AAA teams who are not in conference championships in AV or taking the weekend off. Northern teams are making the drive, including Moorhead and Brainerd who we don’t get all that often in a metro location. Eden Prairie, Brainerd, and St. Cloud Tech get a state kick rematch, with a surging MG team wanting to get in that podium mix. Jazz here should be very strong as well. In class A we get Pelican Rapids taking on Duluth Marshall as one to watch, and AA will feature a broad group, even bringing in the Superior Wisconsin team to compete MSHSL.
South Suburban Conference Championship – Apple Valley High School: The south suburban is already wrapping up for the year just as some teams are just debuting this weekend. Eastview has been leading the pack with Burnsville and Eagan making strong showings this year in both categories. The home team of Apple Valley won’t want to be left out and the Lakeville teams will both be looking to strengthen their positions in the conference as well.
Hopkins mini-meet – Friday 12/14/12: Another one worth mentioning in non-conference action is the Hopkins mini meet which will feature all AAA jazz on Friday night. I didn’t see a schedule of events for this one yet as head coach Allison Bridges is as busy as I am running media relations for MADT on the side…. whatever happens here should be worth noting heading into the holiday as jazz is quickly tuning up and the mistakes are fewer and fewer. These lucky teams will skip the nasty weather and get their dancing in early.
Unknowns: At this point I haven’t seen a schedule for Edina’s first invitational, the Bemidji invitational, and the usual Rochester JM meet was cancelled this year. If we get results from Edina and Bemidji I’ll be sure to get them up.
