Weekend Preview: December Firsts

December descends upon us for the first big invitational weekend of the season.  This month is guaranteed to be a rush of back to back conference and invitational events for most teams in metro conferences.  Meanwhile, outstate and small school teams will be seeing their first events of the year.  The Saturday snow threat trend continues yet again, so travel safe!

Brainerd Invitational:  The best AAA show this weekend will be in the north country when the Kixters will host.  This is an every-other-year event with 13 AAA varsity teams making the trip this time.  Eastview, Wayzata, Mounds View, Eden Prairie, Brainerd, Spring Lake Park, Chaska, and Lakeville South have all been in recent state lineups.  I love the Eastview/Wayzata rivalry of course, but I’ll really like to see how Spring Lake Park, Eden Prairie, and Chaska will shake out.  Small A/AA division starts at 4:20pm.  Be sure to check out Aitkin’s premier here as well.

Catholic Jamboree:  A fun tradition happens this weekend at Benilde when they host an all-catholic school event.  Totino Grace, Holy Angels, Holy Family, Benilde, and St. Cloud Cathedral will be on hand.  This event is performance focused, not score reporting.  This early tune-up will be good for these powerhouse teams to see and be seen.

Cannon Falls Invitational:  A surprise event popped up as Cannon Falls offered to fill the void from the cancelled Apple Valley meet.  Randolph, Cannon Falls, Zumbrota Mazeppa, Wabasha Kellogg, and Lake City will be highlights of the class A division.  Winona, Rochester Century, and New Prague top the must watch teams from AA/AAA.  Some newer programs from Pine City and Owatonna make an elusive appearance here as well.   This is a small gym for this many teams – get there early!

Hutchinson Invitational:  The Hutch invite will be mostly west and central A and AA teams.  Hutchinson, Delano, and Marshall will be worth checking out.  I’ll be interested to see if Delano’s strong start from 2 weeks ago will continue to roll.  New Ulm Cathedral, PACT Charter, Litchfield, and ACGC will all be on hand from section 2A to keep things interesting in that race.  It’s a long road from here to sections however.

Detroit Lakes Invitational: The Lakers host the bulk of the section 4A teams with DGF, Frazee, Bagley, and Pelican Rapids all having high hopes for this season.  With both Aitkin and Frazee competing this weekend (separately) I’ll be interested to see where their scores will start out as they slowly make their way towards a head-to-head matchup.

Forest Lake Invitational: I remember when this event was so tiny it was over in an hour.  This one will be the marathon day this weekend with 9 hours of dancing.  AA will be a morning event with highlights from Faribault, South St. Paul, Mound Westonka, Orono, and Austin.  The Faribault/Austin kick battle is really fun and they’ll be going back to back.  I have Marshall listed as competing here and at Hutchinson, so that’s probably wrong.  Stay tuned on that one.  Over on AAA, Edina, Anoka, Maple Grove, Hopkins, and Blaine will be taking on the host school and 10 other teams.  2:15pm AAA start.

Hayfield Invitational:  No schedule at time of posting.  (one of these years I’ll get a schedule for this one!) Likely small southeast regional class A meet.
