Weekend Preview – December Invitationals

Oooh things are getting interesting around here as more and more teams pull in multiple performances in each category.  Many class A teams are getting into the swing of things and this weekend will have a lot more action from that class.  December invite season is just a fun time as teams have something, but not everything, on the line.  Anything can and will happen at this weekend’s events.  Let’s take a look at what’s going on a crispy cold December Saturday.

Lakeville North Invitational:  The Lakeliners are trying to make it a banner 2017 after last year’s breakout kick season.  They’ll host a wide variety of AAA teams from all around the state from Rogers to Rochester.  Catch performances from St. Francis, Henry Sibley, Farmington, Northfield and Shakopee especially.

Eastview Invitational: The opposite of low-key this week might be best described as the annual Eastview Invitational marathon event.  Running 9am to 9pm – this one features early season battles in both AA and AAA.  St. Cloud Cathedral, Rocori, Sartell, Mound Westonka, Totino Grace, Simley, Benilde St. Margarets, and Marshall will all join the tough field of 12 AA teams.  In the AAA varsity category, Prior Lake, Wayzata, Edina, Mounds View, Lakeville South, Chaska, and Maple Grove join the up and comers from Eden Prairie, Chanhassen, Blaine, Hopkins, and Forest Lake.  Keep an eye out for a sneaky New Prague team who’s showing some spark on the scoresheet.  They dance first in the 5:45 start.

Albany Invitational:  Albany hosts A and AA this weekend.  Catch Hutchinson, Becker, Detroit Lakes, New London Spicer, and Duluth Marshall as can’t-miss performances.  Foley and Minnewaska will be here as well, both being newer programs there will be a lot of growth to see.

Fridley Invitational:  The tigers host another one of the marathon events with a huge AA, AAA and even an interesting A division.  Rockford, Austin, Faribault, South St. Paul, and Orono keep things challenging for AA, while BOLD, Cannon Falls, and PACT will meet up with 6 class A teams.  Aitkin is a drop here – my schedule doesn’t show that.  Unfortunately, that means we won’t get an early season state clash from them and BOLD/Cannon Falls.  Alas we’ll have to wait!  Class AAA will be starting up at 5:30 where Duluth East, Anoka, Andover, Rochester Century, and our new Owatonna team will be looking good for top placements.

Zumbrota Mazeppa Invitational:  Class A only meets really get underway this weekend with Zumbrota and RCW both hosting.  Zumbrota and St. Charles will be noteworthy in both jazz and kick, with Plainview always in there to spoil the party.  Many debut performances here and an early preview of 3 Rivers Conference matchups.

Renville County West Invitational: RCW managed to pull in some of the section 4A teams this year and will be hosting Worthington, Frazee, Montevideo, and Lac Qui Parle Valley as notable names in this 11 team field.  Litchfield gets a stronger test as a new class A team this week and I’ll be keeping an eye out for how Pelican Rapids and Canby are doing in this event.
