Weekend Preview – December Warmup

Looks like a nice weekend on tap and everyone will be hitting the road to some kind of invitational this weekend. A whopping 9 invites between tonight and Saturday. Many teams will be bringing out their kick routines for the first time either this week at conference events or at weekend invites, so be sure to check those new dances out. What I haven’t seen yet this year is announcements of live video feed for events. If you see one, let me know so I can share that here. Seems like something we should have more of.

RCW Invitational: The class A division gets going tonight at Renville County West with a great lineup featuring Yellow Medicine East, BOLD (Olivia), Montevideo, Canby-Minneota, and New Ulm Cathedral as usually strong competitors. Class A is always wide open this time of year and clean will be king on the scoresheet tonight.

Minnewaska Invitational: Up and coming Minnewaska will be hosting other brand-new teams that I don’t see much of around the invite circuit. Should be fun watching new-ish teams from Blackduck, Osakis, and Sauk Centre joining a mix of mid-state A and AA teams. Look for Willmar and MACCRAY to want to place well here.

Chaska Invitational: The Hawks will be hosting their traditional AAA super-matchup with big names coming together for the first time this year. Wayzata, Maple Grove, Lakeville South, Eden Prairie, Spring Lake Park, Mounds View, Edina, and Eastview to name a few will be on hand. What will really be fun is to see how conference points and standings from the last 3 weeks translates into head-to-head matchups with other conferences. I’m expecting scores to jump around here by a fair amount up or down from weeknight action. Jazz scores statewide have been crazy high so far and kick scores have been somewhat languishing behind. I think we’ll see if that is going to hold up this year after this event.

Academy of Holy Angels Invitational: Winter Jam has a AAA division for the first time since I can recall, but the biggest news here is the Starliners won’t be competing at their home event. It’s not going to feel the same as years’ past, but I’m glad the event is going to happen. Duluth East and Anoka will be features from AAA, with Mound Westonka, Orono, Austin, and Sartell getting together for the first time this year on the AA side. Everyone in that group looks to have a strong year and has improved from last season, so scores should be high.

Zumbrota Mazeppa Invitational: Southeast teams will come together for an open event with no clear leaders. Lake City and Wabasha will take on St. Charles and ZM as usual with spoilers from Houston, Dover Eyota, and Plainview trying to shake things up.

____________________________________________________

Cannon Falls Invitational: The Bombers host a big class A meet in the morning with PACT, Randolph, Holy Family (new to Class A), Goodhue, and Concordia Academy looking to have an early preview of section 2A. AA and AAA go in the afternoon with Henry Sibley and New Prague looking to be a tough battle and the Faribault vs. Totino Grace rivalry begins for another year. Should be a classic.

____________________________________________________

Detroit Lakes Invitational: Class A will be the one to watch here as Crosby Ironton, Duluth Marshall, Dilworth, Frazee, Aitkin, and Bagley will all be bringing their best. Section 4A is very challenging, so these teams will want to start out strong this weekend.

____________________________________________________

Hutchinson Invitational: Marshall, Delano, GFW, and Willmar will mix things up with the host school looking to place well in the kick division especially. Keep an eye out for scores from Marshall and Delano against rivals who will be at Holy Angels this weekend.

Albany Invitational: No schedule at time of press. Mid State A and AA teams.
