Weekend Preview: Frozen Fun

Fun and refinement is the name of the game this week as we’re coming down to the last 3-4 opportunities to get some feedback and know what you’re planning to bring to sections 2020.  Results on this weekend of the season tend to be a little deceptive if you don’t know if someone just made some serious changes, made cuts, or otherwise invested in some long-term projects in their routines.  Then of course it’s the last weekend to get some film for all-state submissions so dancers in the running for that will be bringing their best.  Its not yet crunch time for teams to be post-season ready, so enjoy the fun and stay warm while watching your favorite dances.  Here’s where the events will be:

Lewiston Altura Invitational:  The cardinals host a southeast regional event where St. Charles will take on Plainview, Houston, and much of the 3 Rivers Conference foes they’d like to keep ahead of.  The Saints have been looking strong this year and should be favored here.

Rocori Invitational:  The Rocori invite is one of my annual favorites as it draws an eclectic mix and a strong roster from A and AA teams every year no fail.  AA in the morning will see St. Cloud Tech, Detroit Lakes, Melrose, and Hutchinson taking on the hosts for top honors.  Class A starts at 2pm and will be the largest A matchup this year with 19 teams.  Crosby, Lac Qui Parle, Frazee, BOLD, Lake City, Aitkin, Yellow Medicine East, Wabasha Kellogg, Duluth Marshall, and Montevideo are all state caliber teams who will be there.  The Frazee/Lac Qui Parle matchup is one to watch closely.

Anoka Invitational: The twisters have a big class AA event with Cretin Derham Hall looking good against outstate challengers from Duluth Denfeld, Albert Lea, and Hermantown Proctor hoping to do well.  AAA has an interesting mix with Burnsville, Hopkins, Forest Lake, and Brainerd looking to challenge Anoka for top honors.  Since these folks don’t get together much it should be an open field.

Bloomington Kennedy Invitational:  The Bloomington team has a great gym, and the site of the annual super-section so many folks will be on hand to get an early dress rehearsal.  Henry Sibley, Blaine, and Spring Lake Park will take on up and coming teams from Eagan, Roseville, Andover, and Waconia who will want to make an impression on the judges as well.  Varsity doesn’t start until 4:15pm and goes back to back so it’s a good one to catch if you want an evening event.

Lakeville South Invitational:  The Cougars’ traditional South for the Winter invite will try to warm things up for 11 AAA teams and some small A and AA matchups.  Prior Lake, Lakeville North, Centennial, and Maple Grove will be worth catching on the AAA side, but AA could be the bigger highlight with Mound Westonka, Faribault, Totino Grace, and Orono making up the field.  I’m kinda sad someone will be “last” it doesn’t seem quite right to say that about any of those programs.  Zumbrota Mazeppa and Cannon Falls should be a good one to compare from the class A group and will round out the day.

Holy Family Catholic Invitational: Holy Family is having a breakout season after moving back down to class A and will be taking on challengers from PACT, Minnewaska, Kingsland, and Atwater CGC. Whats great about that small lineup is all of those teams are also making some moves this year and have state tournaments in mind. The AA event will feature Simley against Mayer Lutheran WC, Tri City, Kasson, and Glencoe. No bets on who’s going to have a top tier placement out of that group since they don’t seem to meet much. Should be entertaining.

Rochester Century Invitational:  No schedule at time of press.

Belle Plaine Invitational: No schedule at time of press.
