2015 school schedule is wrapping up here fast – but we still have a ton of dance team performances to see between now and the new year. This week we’re actually starting on Friday with 2 evening invitationals, then a jam packed Saturday which will include the first of our conference championships already! The competition season is already half over, if you can believe it, but the best is yet to come! Don’t go away this holiday break as we’ll have scores updates, the traditional sections leaderboard updates, and who knows what surprises.
Frazee Invitational: Friday night starts with the “Fly Girls” invitational for northern teams. Crosby Ironton will be making the trek over to have the first head to head matchup of the season with their section rival Frazee. Pelican Rapids will also be there trying to play spoiler in this all section 4 matchup.
Atwater Cosmos Grove City Invitational: The 2nd Friday night event will be at ACGC where they will host Norwood Young America, BBE/Paynesville, and MACCRAY. This small mini-event could really feature any winner in kick and jazz as these teams haven’t had a long history of meets this season.
Lake Superior Conference: The eclectic “conference” around Duluth will be a chance for the MN side of the lake to journey across borders to face the Superior WI team. Duluth Marshall will take on AA names from Hermantown, Duluth Denfeld, and Superior. Should be low key, but a fun change in routine for teams who normally have to make the haul to the cities every weekend.
BOLD Invitational: Bird Island Elementary is where the Diva’s main gym is located – and its’ going to be a packed house as usual for this one. Last year I think I stood in a line more than a block long just to get in! All that fuss is about the great line up of statewide teams who will feature Yellow Medicine East, Cannon Falls, St. Charles, Bagley, Renville County West, New Ulm Cathedral, Montevideo, and 8 other A teams. Quite a bit on the line for this last of December meet. Things get serious in class A come January.
South Suburban Conference Championships: Arguably the most stacked for talent meet this weekend will be at the SSC championships, held at Lakeville North this year. Getting 4th or 5th place will be an amazing accomplishment here as the south metro has been giving the west metro teams a run for the title of toughest region. Watch for Eastview to complete a perfect season, and Prior Lake, Lakeville South, Burnsville, and Lakeville North will all want something big from this one too.
Edina Invitational: The AAA teams not in conference action this weekend will be over at Edina where the surging Hornets program will host rivals from Spring Lake Park, Anoka, and 6 other schools. Anoka’s kick dance is pretty “sparkling” and fast becoming a favorite. Be sure to catch that and the Edina jazz routine here. Catch the Alliance Dance Network’s coverage of this event – we’ll be posting it here after the event. A small school division will host Rockford, Pine River, and Annandale. Rockford is also listed for a 10am performance of jazz over at AHA – which would mean they’re planning 2 jazz meets this weekend (clever!).
Academy of Holy Angels Invitational: The highlight of the early season for AA teams is the Winter Jam at AHA. The all AA line up will feature teams from Mound Westonka, Sartell, St. Cloud Cathedral, Austin, Fridley, Rocori, Marshall, and Rockford just to name the state tournament teams. 19 teams in the class will make for some interesting final placements. Jazz at 10am, kick at 1:30.
Metro West Conference Championships: The evening nightcap will be just a few blocks away from the Holy Angels site, with Metro West being held at Richfield public. Kick at 5:30 and Jazz at 7:30. If you’re really ambitious (and yes, I thought about it) you could catch the Holy Angels lineup and see Chaska, Chanhassen, Benilde, Kennedy, Richfield, and Cooper after. I speculate these events are sharing judges even. Could be some serious dance team binge-watching. Highlights here are certainly the Chaska, Chan, Benilde rivalry where all 3 elite level programs will be battling it out.
Lake City Invitational: The Southeast A teams will gather at Lake City where Randolph, Lake City, Wabasha Kellogg, Zumbrota Mazeppa, and Dover Eyota all look good for high placements. This region is usually all on top of each other score-wise, so we’ll see what might come from this one. 13 varsity teams here should make for some good class A competition.
Monday: Metro East Championship @ Tartan
Tuesday: Plainview EM Invitational
