Well my usual trick of filling a target bag with some snow for injuries isn’t working out so hot this year. Fortunately dance team doesn’t need winter conditions to compete, unlike our poor ski team friends who end up running in the hallways and looking for practice space not taken up by us indoor folks. The MLK weekend will keep us all busy with plenty of dance team events on Saturday, the Timberwolves dance team clinic on Sunday, and a bonus invitational on Monday too. Wayzata invite has a live stream if all you wanna do is sit on the couch and shout out “that girl is not lined up correctly!” at the TV and annoy your non-dance team obsessed family. 11 big events to check out:
Wayzata Invitational: The classic event hosted at Wayzata will be the last of the Leslie Swiggum era and it kinda makes me sad. Not that things don’t go on next year, maybe its more that “invitational” has changed and evolved so much since it first began for the Trojets program it makes you get all nostalgic for the past. Check out the mega-meet action on the live stream with JV at 10am, B squads at 1:40pm and varsity starts at 3:45pm. The all AAA lineup will feature some of the best programs against each other. For example, the first 7 performances are all state participants: Prior Lake, Edina, Brainerd, Blaine, Anoka, Mounds View, Eden Prairie. Yikes! St. Cloud Tech, Lakeville North, and Wayzata will be on the must-see list, but I’m keeping an eye on those up in the air sections spots and the teams that really want them like Sauk Rapids, Forest Lake, and Hopkins. Every single year this invite has some fun results, but also shows just how much things change by sections and state time.
Big 9 Conference Championship: The Big 9 meet is a mixed class event with Austin and Faribault usually taking the lead. What will be interesting this year is Owatonna who is a newer program; but having a good season. Albert Lea is in that same boat where things could get interesting.
St. Michael Albertville Invitational: The Knights host a small A/AA division with Becker, Zimmerman, and ACGC looking to take home some hardware. The AAA division is more fun here with Andover, Spring Lake Park, and Duluth East among those who will be the hardest challenge for the hosts.
3 Rivers Conference Championship: This meet always gives me an early look in to what might happen in section 1A with strong showings expected from Houston, Lewiston Altura, St. Charles, Wabasha Kellogg, and Plainview. This one’s a Friday night event with a start time of 6pm at Plainview High School.
Cannon Falls Invitational: The bombers host their second invite of the year after making an impromptu one for December. PACT Charter, Lake City, Richfield, Randolph, Wabasha Kellogg, and New Ulm Cathedral will be on hand for an exciting class A match. Interestingly it looks Wabasha and Houston will be double dipping this one doing this meet in the morning and conference champs that night. I’d love to hear how that one worked out. Making the most of that bus fee that’s for sure. (edit…it would help if I knew the 3 Rivers meet was Friday. Still, busy weekend for those teams!)
Yellow Medicine East Invitational: YME hosts the top tier of the western small schools with Montevideo, BOLD, Renville County West, Lac Qui Parle, and Canby making the trip. Zumbrota Mazeppa will be making the long haul from the east to try to upset things. Their jazz this year is scoring strongly and should be a good challenge for the hosts.
Totino Grace Invitational: This one is my pick of the week for spectators not only because the school always hosts a nice event, but also because the AA lineup can’t be beat. South St Paul, Marshall, Sartell, St. Cloud Cathedral, Rocori, Simley, and Totino will be looking to shore up section spots and get one last look at each other.
Foley Invitational: The up and comers from Foley will be hosting their first invite with an eclectic mix from all 3 classes. This wide-open field probably favors the home team and their AA opponents from Willmar. Should be a fast and fun event from 10am to noon.
Wright County Conference Championships: The WCC points are on the line at Hutchinson this weekend with Mound Westonka, Orono, Waconia, Holy Family, and Hutchinson all in the hunt. Things always end up so tight from this conference it’s gonna be a close one again more than likely.
Pelican Rapids Invitational: no schedule at time of posting. The usual suspects from the far north likely join up at Pelican Rapids this weekend.
Maccray Invitational: Monday night we wrap up the long weekend with everyone having competed somewhere else on Saturday. ACGC, Canby, and Yellow Medicine East will be challengers for an improving host team looking to do some damage on their home floor. 6:30pm start
