Weekend Preview – Mid-December Invitationals

This weekend is the main event of December, with 9 invitationals going on across the state. There will be some major battles for early season dominance in AAA and a few A and AA sections that have key matchups. One thing is for sure, it’s gonna be another cold one so bust out that seat cushion and settle in for some long days in the gym. The dance-floor will certainly be HOT!

Eastview Invitational: The premier AAA event this weekend will be at Eastview, where they are hosting their annual (and huge) event. 13 AA teams will go for top honors. Keep an eye on Sartell, Academy of Holy Angels, and Holy Family in this pairing. Varsity AAA will boast 21 teams going all varsity every other jazz and kick. Maple Grove, Wayzata, and Eastview all meet up for the first time this year, and former AA teams Chaska and Faribault will look to spoil the party. Eden Prairie and St. Cloud Tech should also do well here as my dark horse picks. *AA corrected….I missed a bunch!

Lakeville North: The Lakeliners are hosting a more mellow AAA meet, with no state champions in the mix here, it’ll be nice to see these teams shake out a new winner. Watch for Lakeville North, Henry Sibley, and Prior Lake to do well here.

Albany Invitational: This one has some solid class A action as Pelican Rapids, Aitkin, and Duluth Marshall all clash as top names from a new-look section 4A. Aitkin never brings out their jazz until January, so that one will have to stay under wraps. In AA, St. Cloud Cathedral and Rocori take on some of section 4AA.

Hutchinson Invitational: Section 3AA will be making a showing at this event, with debut performances from Norwood and Sleepy Eye in class A.

Fridley Invitational: The Tigers host a huge AA line up, with 12 teams from as far away as Superior WI to Montevideo to Albert Lea. Class A here will be a meeting of half of section 2A, with no defending champion from this section, it’s anyone’s game. This meet will be fun for how many rarely seen teams will be there. Lots of new names in both A and AA this year.

Edina Invitational: The Hornets are a team on the rise, and they’ll be matching against strong programs from Rogers, Champlin Park, and Shakopee to name a few. This all AAA event will be a fun one.

BOLD Invitational: the “out west” schedule of meets really kicks off this weekend with the annual BOLD invitational. Mayer Lutheran, RCW, and BOLD are state veterans who will be there, with Yellow Medicine East making its kick debut here as well. Results here can really set the tone for what we’ll see from a very strong section 3A come January.

Bemidji Invitational: The far northland will play host to some distant teams at their annual event, with neighbor Bagley making it’s debut for the year. A mix of 5 other A and AA teams from the extreme north will be in the hunt here as well.

Zumbrota Mazeppa Invitational: No schedule yet at time of publication. The ZM invite is typically a host of section 1A teams making their early season debuts. Lake City will try to defend it’s position on top of the kick division and host Zumbrota will try to follow up last year’s 3rd in state jazz performance with something new.

Rochester JM Invitational: Event cancelled this year.
