Weekend Preview – Mid-December Invites

Time to dodge the usual snowflakes that fall during mid-december meets and get out to watch some dancing. The pre-season jitters and “that was a bad idea” moves are out of our collective system and things really take a turn for the better this week. Some of my favorite “classic” events are this weekend at venues all across the state. Here’s what to expect for invite weekend 3:

Lakeville North Invitational: The Lakeliners are off to a strong start this season and hope to turn in some top performances on their home floor this weekend. This all AAA meet features Farmington, Spring Lake Park, St. Francis, Henry Sibley, East Ridge, Woodbury, Cretin, and New Prague teams. This eclectic mix should bring some surprises in a rather wide open field.

Eastview Invitational: The Lightning invitational is a season favorite for many teams as the biggest names in the sport go head-to-head for really the first time this year. The morning division features St. Cloud Cathedral, Sauk Rapids, Sartell, Mound Westonka, Benilde, Totino Grace, Rocori, Marshall, Simley, and Duluth Marshall all made state last year in the A/AA division. AAA heats up with varsity at 5:30pm. Watch Edina, Chaska, St. Cloud Tech, Prior Lake, Wayzata, Maple Grove, Blaine, Lakeville South, and Eastview all return from last year’s state field. The results from this meet are notoriously bad predictors of who will be on top by sections – so enjoy this one for what it’s worth – today’s results only.

Albany Invitational: Albany hosts a northern team mix from section 3 and 4AA. Waconia, Monticello, and Detroit Lakes will be strong contenders for the top spot. In class A we Frazee takes on a good looking Pelican Rapids team. Sauk Center and Foley will continue their debut performance seasons at this meet, so catch those routines as well.

Fridley Invitational: Fridley’s annual invite continues to grow with large AA and AAA divisions this year. Rockford, Delano, Austin, and Faribault will be big names to see in AA, with Anoka looking to defend their top finish from last year in the AAA division. There will even be a small class A division here with Lac Qui Parle making the journey to face Cannon Falls and section 2A.

Zumbrota Mazeppa Invitational: Section 1A heats up quickly with this annual event at ZM. Houston, St. Charles, Lake City, and Zumbrota will be names to catch in this lineup. A little momentum goes a long way in this section, so teams will want to be at their best on Saturday.

Renville County West Invitational: Section 3A has its first big meet of the year at RCW with Worthington, BOLD, YME, and RCW trying to stay in the lead in that section against the rest of the regional field. Things change quickly in class A so watch out for up and coming teams from this meet.
