Weekend Preview – New Year, New Meets

If the deep freeze has got you down, we’ve got plenty of warm gyms to fill for the first weekend of 2018.  It always feels like we turn towards the home stretch to state once that calendar flips a year, doesn’t it?  It’s gonna be a fast trek to the finish line from here and I can’t wait to see some live dancing after 2 weeks of nothing.  Here’s a look at the key matchups:

Alexandria Invitational:  The cardinals host a huge A/AA event at their palace of dance team in central MN.  Morning features AA with Rocori taking on a bunch of up and comers.  Melrose, St. Cloud Apollo, Delano, and Alexandria are all having solid years and will be the ones to catch here.  Class A will showcase Frazee, Crosby, BOLD, Aitkin, and Duluth Marshall.  Keep an eye out for a strong jazz program at DGF who would like to make a move in the section 4A field.

Henry Sibley Invitational:  Hopkins, Centennial, and Duluth East will put the challenge to Warriors in the AAA division this year.  A small class A division will include New London Spicer, Richfield, and PACT who could have some interesting implications for sections tournaments.  Over on the AA side of the field, Faribault and Simley will have a great matchup along with Kasson Mantorville who is having a good year from section 1AA.

Lakeville South Invitational:  South will be hosting a small but powerful AAA division where Maple Grove, Brainerd, Sauk Rapids, Anoka, Chaska, Minneapolis Southwest, and Rochester Century will be going head to head.  Brainerd has been very quiet in December so don’t miss their return performance in the metro area.  A/AA top players will be from Zumbrota, Orono, Randolph, Mound Westonka, Cannon Falls, and Marshall.  With A and AA together, things can get interesting in the results column.  Teams will be focusing on scores and getting the cobwebs off after winter break.

Winona Invitational:  The Winhawks will be hosting a SE regional meet where Lake City, Houston, St. Charles, Wabasha, and host Winona will be highlight performances.  This one will be setting us up for the 3 Rivers Conference event later in the month.

Goodhue Invitational: A fun and eclectic mix of teams will join Goodhue for their noon invite.  Spectrum and Concordia Academy rarely leave the metro so it should be interesting when they meet with GFW, Triton, Byron, Kingsland, Hayfield, Southland, and Fairmont.  This one is wide open for a new winner.

Edina Invitational:  Edina hosts the largest match of the weekend with 10 A/AA teams and 13 AAA teams.  Sartell, Waconia, and Benilde St. Margarets look strong in the AM division, while Spring Lake Park, Lakeville North, Prior Lake, Chanhassen, Armstrong, Forest Lake, and Edina will be leading the pack in the evening AAA event.  Catch some elite exhibition performances from UofM, Mankato State, and the Eden Prairie Pom Squad.

Mississippi 8 Conference Championship:  This conference championship will be pretty fun since the lead changes are hard to keep up with.  Chisago Lakes, St. Francis, Rogers, and St. Michael all have chances to make some magic in Monticello this weekend.
