Weekend Preview: Season Debut 18-19

It’s here!  The first weekend preview for the 18-19 season is unique in that we didn’t have a single conference event before weekend invitationals started this year.  Everyone will be debuting publicly scored routines starting tomorrow into the first few weeks of December.  Thanksgiving week will also have a handful of major kick-off matchups, so we’ll be highlighting those as well.  A few helpful reminders as we get into a new year:

  • 2 major south metro events happen this weekend, but 35W between downtown and 62 will be closed. If you’re not used to heading that way, this might be worth noting.
  • Snow will be joining the southern half of the state late Friday night, so the days of dry and clear weekend invitationals is already at an end.
  • Wondering about competition etiquette? Tips for spectators? (leave the coat, bring the cash) Curious about the scoresheet? Check out our article archives for details on all kinds of dance team insider info.

Burnsville Invitational:  Saturday’s largest event will feature a small AA division and 12 AAA teams.  State teams from Eastview, Prior Lake, Lakeville North, and Spring Lake Park will be on deck to show at least some of their upcoming routines.  These early debuts will be more about what will be than what is.  Time to get the icky out and get into peak form for December.  Jazz will be the major contest (10am start).  Kick will start at 2:30.  This event will be live streamed via Burnsville public TV.

Farmington Invitational:  An earlier date for the Tiger’s invite will welcome 7 AAA teams from a diverse geography.  This group will be more interested in personal performances than in the final outcome.  11am start.

Delano Invitational:  The small school major matchup this weekend is at Delano with featured performances from Rockford, Mound Westonka, Zimmerman, Crosby Ironton and 10 other A and AA teams.  I’m keeping an eye on any surprise surges from this group, as this one is packed with high potential teams.  Don’t miss the Waconia/Hutchinson rivalry and look for Crosby to place well even in a mostly AA lineup.

Saturday Shows:  Small performance focused shows will be held at Hopkins and Sartell this weekend and both attract some big names who want a more toned-down debut.  Class A fans can check out Frazee at Sartell and Eden Prairie and Edina are must-see at Hopkins.

Monday 11/19 Conference Events:  Suburban East will be doing jazz at Mounds View and Mississippi 8 will have its last season kick off (in the current line up at least) at Buffalo.  Mounds View and Forest Lake have been building a good conference rivalry in the SEC worth following.  Over at Miss8: Rogers and STMA are looking to hold the top prize.

Tuesday 11/20 Conference Events:  Before we head into the feast Metro East, Metro West, and South Suburban Conferences will give us a treat.  These are 3 of my favorite conferences to speculate on, especially South Suburban who is the bulk of section 1AAA.  Eastview, Prior Lake, Lakeville North, and Lakeville South have a lot on the line but the whole lineup is stacked.  Getting 6th here isn’t easy.  Metro East has a classic matchup between South St. Paul, Simley, and Henry Sibley.  Anything can and does happen there.  With SSP hosting, my money is on them coming out strong.  Metro West will be the only kick conference this week with an eclectic mix of teams.  Chanhassen, Chaska, and Benilde St. Margarets make for a fun and wide-open field for a winner to emerge.  Check out Richfield coming off their first state appearance in the modern era of dance team last year.

Let the fun begin!
