Weekend Previews – 1/19/13

We have a huge MLK weekend on tap with 6 invitationals and 5 conference championships on Saturday alone!  2 more meets tonight and more on Monday will keep us all busy dancing on this blistering cold weekend.  I guess I can’t think of anything better!  (ok, my upcoming vacation to Mexico does sound good right about now….)  Lets take a look at the best of the best from this weekend:

Wayzata Invitational:

The premier AAA matchup in the state always happens at the Wayzata Invitational.  If you aren’t going to be elsewhere this weekend, I’d suggest getting over there.  I haven’t seen a schedule as of yet, but this is where the biggest AAA teams have a final pre-sectional tune up.  Whatever happens at this meet usually changes by state, but it sure can set the tone for who is going to get what they want at sections this year.

Totino Grace Invitational:

The AA version of the Wayzata meet will be going on in Fridley as Totino hosts an all AA event.  Expect major players who aren’t at conference championships to be here.  Some of these teams haven’t all been in one room since the AHA invitational in December, and lots has changed since then!

Pelican Rapids Invitational:

The northern A teams had the weekend off from Hawley cancelling, and will be ready to meet at Pelican this weekend.  Again, no schedule at time of press.

Mayer Lutheran Invitational:

Section 2A will be having it out at this one, with everyone scrambling to meet the new changes to section qualifiers.  (only 2 kick teams from section 2A will be at state) This will be a big deal for those teams as they prepare to meet Aitkin and Duluth Marshall in 2 weeks.

Farmington Invitational:

This will be a mixed A/AA/AAA event as Farmington hosts its first ever invite.  Cannon Falls will finally bring out a jazz routine for the first time this year against a AA/AAA field.  Northfield and Chisago Lakes will be here busy tuning up their final push for a state berth this year.

Yellow Medicine East Invitational:

YME will play host to the western A teams this weekend with BOLD and Lac Qui Parle looking to settle the dispute started last week with their tie.  Host YME will look to stay dominant in their home meet.  Tracy and RCW will both try to make impressions worthy of state spots in 2 weeks when they will settle it all at sections in Montevideo.

Conference Championships:

Lake Superior Conference:  Duluth area schools will have a mini meet to stay sharp and have some fun in a close knit group up there.

3 Rivers Conference:  Wabasha and St. Charles will clash with Dover and the far SE class A teams for what usually turns into a trip to the state tournament for the winner of the conference down the road.

Mississippi 8:  Rogers looks to continue its dominance of the conference in this championship.

Big 9:  Powerhouse Faribault comes together with section rival Austin and the AAA Rochester schools for a conference title.

Wright County Conference:  The Wright is much of the western AA section and is constantly flip-flopping.  This one should be full of surprises as Orono, Delano, Hutchinson, Mound Westonka, and Holy Family have all swapped places this year.  Waconia is always a dark horse this time of year and manages to find a state berth even if they don’t do well here.  You know Marshall and Montevideo will be watching these results closely.
