In Depth: Early Invitationals

Happy Monday – it’s another beautiful week in the land of dance team.  If you didn’t get out to watch some invitational or conference action this weekend – you’ve still got a chance to catch some conferences tonight and Tuesday.  Mississippi 8, South Suburban, Metro East and Metro West will all be hosting kick-off events this week.  Hop on over to the schedules page to see what’s new.  If I don’t have a performance order for you – just plan that most meets start at 7 pm if not listed.  Check with your host school’s calendar for more details.

Lets review the leaderboards so far:

Invitationals got off to a big start with events at Maple Grove, Delano, Burnsville, and Eagan.  The biggest news of the weekend was certainly the fact that we’re seeing debut scores in the 80s.  Usually it takes a few outings to see an 80 average – but Eastview and Maple Grove jazz dances are both over that mark already.  I got a chance to catch the Maple Grove AAA division – and I expect the bar to be raised in the AAA jazz division this year after watching that.  Maple Grove’s routine to “Sound of Silence” connects with the audience and tells a poignant story that puts the challenge out there to the viewer.  Having danced twice already, Armstrong is coming out strong with a captivating and wow-inducing routine that is a sneaky favorite.  On the south end of town, keep an eye out for the Prior Lake team who’s our 3rd highest score of the division  – they’ll be in conference action on Tuesday.  Once they have a South Suburban meet, we’ll really see where we stand.

In AA – a section 2AA battle got tight early with Monticello and Chisago Lakes finding themselves in a virtual tie.  Lots of meets to go to see where that one will lead.  Totino Grace out of that section had a Friday night debut and took out some major AAA teams on the way to the top.  They won’t be having a post-victory slump that’s for sure.  Faribault looks strong again this year in both kick and jazz, but without much head-to-head AA competition for them, just how accurate those scores will be in December will be worth watching.

Not much going on in Class A just yet, but Brooklyn Center and ACGC got some kick scores on the board to get us going.

Keep sending in those results as you see them!  Stay tuned for another podcast season preview tomorrow.
