Section Previews – Weekend 2

Sections weekend two is here!  I don’t know about you –but I get a little sentimental this time of year.  I really enjoyed watching section 3AA last weekend – You gals sure left your hearts on the floor! Thanks to all those who saw me there and stopped to say hi.  I love hearing you’re reading, listening, and following dance with me.  Sections sure are a special time and I’m thrilled to share it with you on mnhsdanceteam.com   Let’s see what’s going on this weekend:

A note on state berths:  Section assignments are very uneven this year (and every year).  In response, the league assigns the number of state berths per section according to how many teams are actually going to show up in your region.  I’ve noted the number of teams advancing per section in each preview.

Weekend 2:  Saturday 2/11/17

Section 1A: Dover Eyota High School (2 jazz and 3 kick berths)

Section 1A kicks things off with St. Charles and Zumbrota Mazeppa in a big lead for the two jazz places.  This is a kick-heavy section with many teams focusing only on that style.  Wabasha and Houston have made some trips to state and jazz in the past and will look to keep things tight.  The kick division is a tight match with St. Charles, Wabasha Kellogg, Lake City, and Zumbrota Mazeppa looking for the top 3.

Section 2A: Bloomington Kennedy AM Session (2 jazz and 2 kick berths)

The first of the Super-Section meets will feature the tiny section from 2A.  This section always seems to be everyone who’s not southeast, west, or north – so the mix is rather eclectic.  Cannon Falls, Randolph, and PACT Charter are in the hunt for both kick and jazz spots.  The last time these teams met in person was the first meet of the year – and in class A that might as well have been a whole season ago.

Section 3A: Montevideo High School (4 jazz and 4 kick berths)

Section 3 enjoys the benefits of a low turnout from section 1 and 2 this year with 4 tickets to state.  Jazz has flipped from BOLD to Lac Qui Parle to YME and back again, with Worthington and New Ulm Cathedral in the mix for that 4th spot.  Kick should favor a clear top 4 with BOLD, Lac Qui Parle, Montevideo, and YME breaking 70 averages in recent days.  The order will come down to who’s ready now.

Section 1AA:  Kasson Mantorville High School (3 jazz and 3 kick berths)

The only AA section this week is a fun one with Faribault, Simley, Austin, and South St. Paul all looking to take home a piece of the prize.  Simley and South St. Paul meet frequently, as do Austin and Faribault – but the 4 together will really put on a good show.  The dark horse of the weekend is Academy of Holy Angels who has a strong state legacy, but has been pretty low key the last few years.

Section 1AAA:  Bloomington Kennedy PM Session (3 jazz and 3 kick berths)

The evening show at Bloomington will be the much anticipated section 1AAA.  A frequent gathering spot for teams and fans who have finished their sections already – this is the place to see and be seen.  Eastview, Lakeville North, Lakeville South, and Prior Lake are all ready to give it their all and look good for medals.  Kick is always the more interesting matchup as new dances and programs that have gone pretty quiet these last few weeks come out and impress.  Apple Valley, Burnsville, and Farmington get in the action on the kick side this year and will be drawing attention.  If you finish in the top half in kick here –you’re accomplishing something.

Section 3AAA: Bloomington Kennedy AM Session (3 jazz and 3 kick berths)

Going back to back with 2A will be the wide open field in 3AAA.  While this group is arriving with some of the lower average scores needed to qualify for state – it’s fun because it means no one is unbeatable and things can really get a shakeup if they’ve pulled it together in the last few weeks.  Henry Sibley, Mounds View, and Spring Lake Park have some leading scores right now with Centennial right in the mix wanting a return to the state floor.  Sneaky pick might be Irondale jazz this weekend.  What could make this wild is the leading scorers going back to back 1st and 2nd in the kick order of performance.  That should wake the room up for a 10am start!  I’ve seen this one have some dramatic shifts in expectations from 1st to 3rd and back again – there’s nothing guaranteed in this one.
