Weekend Preview – Sections Weekend 1

We’re here! Its do or die time folks, we are choosing state participants this weekend. The dedication, drive, heart, and sweat that got you here is about to pay off in a final performance or a ticket to the state tournament. There may only be 3 spots, but there can be an unlimited number of “best-of-the-year” performances, so give it your all! Here are some details of what we’ll be seeing this weekend:

Section 2AA: The Chisago section meet will feature a big head to head of Totino Grace and Benilde St. Margarets. Each of these teams has won a jazz matchup, so anything can happen. Benilde looks to return to the state kick field for the first time in 3 seasons, and Totino is making a statement about their kick routine heading into state, so look for some high scores there. Fridley will be looking to take the 3rd spot in both, but Chisago Lakes will try to give it a go in jazz against them. The 2 teams haven’t seen each other since December, and a lot has happened since then to keep this one exciting.

Section 3AA: This one is always a toss up heading into the final rounds, with Mound Westonka, Holy Family, Marshall (who we haven’t seen much of this year), Hutchinson, Orono, and a host of others will all have a legitimate chance to qualify. I suspect the biggest shifts in the leaderboards will happen here. Best dance of the day will take home the hardware.

Section 4AA: The northern AA teams are top notch this year, with Sartell and St. Cloud Cathedral leading the charge. The fun ones here will be the Rocori/Sauk Rapids battle that has been going on. I suspect only one of those 2 will end up with a ticket to state in either style, so there is a lot on the line. Good teams will be staying home after this one.

Section 2AAA: This is the feature lineup for the weekend, with the highest scores of the season being brought in by teams who won’t make it to state out of this one. The 3 teams who survive out of here will really have accomplished something special. Wayzata and Maple Grove will finally have a definitive jazz matching with Chaska, Edina, and Hopkins in there just for fun. Normally, there is a lockdown on the top 2 here – but I think if there is ever a chance to bet on a dark horse, this year might be the one. No one is safe here. Kick is no better as Chaska joins the mix with a surging Eden Prairie team. Wayzata and Maple Grove have finished strong here, and Minnetonka isn’t going away quietly. What a mess to sort out.

Section 4AAA: The northern AAA section will be heating up Elk River again this year, with St. Cloud Tech and Brainerd looking to spoil the fun for north metro teams from Blaine, Andover, and Champlin Park. I’ll be interested to see if we get some surprises here. There are a few teams with some long overdue credit coming to them – perhaps in the form of a state tournament trip. Andover (jazz) and Champlin Park (kick) are my underdog picks here.

Good luck to all of our fabulous Minnesota Dance Teams! You make us all so proud to be a part of this amazing sport. This year will go down as one of the best, congratulations on being a part of it. See you at state!
